Part One: When a Wedding Trip Becomes Something More
There is something instantly inviting about A Costa Rican Wedding. Before the romance even has a chance to unfold, the movie surrounds its characters with sunshine, lush greenery, warm beaches, and the unmistakable feeling of being somewhere far away from everyday life. Hallmark’s 2024 romantic comedy stars Rhiannon Fish as Emily and Christopher Russell as Ryan, bringing two familiar faces together in a story built around friendship, unexpected adventure, and the possibility of finding love where you least expect it.
At the center of the story is Emily, a maid of honor determined to be there for her best friend’s wedding. Unfortunately, her tendency toward mishaps makes the important responsibility much harder than she ever imagined. When things go wrong, she finds herself relying on Ryan, the best man and someone she has long considered a nemesis. Their uneasy partnership becomes the emotional engine of the film.
What makes that setup so enjoyable is that the romance does not begin with two strangers instantly falling for one another. Emily and Ryan already have history. There is irritation, teasing, misunderstanding, and a sense that each has formed an opinion about the other long before either is ready to reconsider it.
That gives their relationship room to evolve.
The destination itself also plays an important role. Costa Rica is more than a pretty backdrop. The beaches, jungle landscapes, wildlife, and adventurous surroundings give the story a sense of freedom that would be difficult to create in a more familiar setting. The movie uses that atmosphere to take Emily and Ryan outside their comfort zones—literally and emotionally.
And that is where the movie’s appeal begins to deepen. Beneath the comedy and wedding chaos is a familiar Hallmark idea: sometimes life has to become unpredictable before we finally notice what has been in front of us all along.
