Part One: The Kind of Romance That Feels Surprisingly Real
Some romantic movies are remembered because of grand declarations, dramatic twists, or picture-perfect endings. Others stay with viewers for a simpler reason: the characters feel like people we could actually know. Surprised by Love, which premiered in 2015 and stars Hilarie Burton and Paul Campbell, belongs firmly in that second category. It has the familiar warmth audiences expect from a Hallmark romance, but underneath its lighthearted premise is a story about recognizing when the life you planned is not necessarily the life that makes you happy.
Campbell plays Maxwell Gridley, a former high-school acquaintance who unexpectedly finds himself back in Josie Mayfield’s life. Josie is a successful businesswoman who believes she has everything figured out, including the relationship she wants. But reconnecting with Gridley creates an entirely different kind of possibility. The movie uses that setup for comedy, but its emotional appeal comes from something more relatable: the idea that people can grow, change and still find their way back to one another.
That is where Campbell’s performance becomes especially important. Gridley could easily have been played as nothing more than the lovable underdog—the slightly awkward former classmate who suddenly becomes the romantic alternative. Instead, Campbell gives him a natural charm that makes the character feel comfortable to watch. There is humor in the performance, but there is also vulnerability. Gridley is not presented as someone who needs to become a completely different person before he can be worthy of love. His appeal comes from being genuine.
That quality is part of what makes the movie’s central relationship work. Campbell and Burton had only met shortly before filming began, yet Campbell later described their connection as natural, helped by their similar senses of humor and personalities. He said they got along very well from the beginning, which helped create the relationship viewers see onscreen.
For a romance like this, chemistry cannot simply be manufactured through dialogue. The audience has to believe there is history between the characters, even when that history is mostly something the story asks us to imagine. Campbell and Burton give the relationship an easy rhythm. Their scenes can be playful without feeling forced, and the emotional moments have room to breathe.
That balance is one reason Surprised by Love remains appealing years after its original release. The movie is not asking viewers to believe that love is perfect. It is asking them to believe that sometimes the right person can make you look at your life differently.
