The Chemistry That Made Viewers Lean Into the Story
Erin Krakow has become closely associated with Hallmark through her work in When Calls the Heart, where she plays Elizabeth Thornton, but her Hallmark career has also included films such as Finding Father Christmas, The Wedding Cottage, Sense, Sensibility & Snowmen and Blind Date Book Club. Hallmark notes that Krakow is classically trained and earned a BFA from Juilliard, bringing a stage background to the warmth and accessibility she brings to her television roles.
That experience is useful in a story like this because Elizabeth’s emotions are often more complicated than the dialogue suggests. Krakow allows the character’s uncertainty to emerge gradually. A small reaction can say as much as a long speech, particularly when Elizabeth begins realizing that the future she imagined may not be the future that makes her happiest.
Opposite her, Tyler Hynes brings David a completely different rhythm. His character is less interested in carefully following expectations, creating an appealing contrast with Elizabeth’s more structured personality. The chemistry works because the two performances do not feel identical. Their characters challenge one another.
That dynamic is one reason the movie remains easy to revisit. Viewers can enjoy the romance while also recognizing the deeper question underneath it: how much of our lives do we choose because we truly want them, and how much do we choose because they seem safe?
The pairing also became significant enough that Hallmark later reunited Krakow and Hynes for Christmas Above the Clouds, their first holiday movie together. Hallmark specifically notes that the pair first captured viewers’ attention together in It Was Always You.
There is something satisfying about seeing an on-screen pairing return after an earlier romance has already made an impression. It reminds fans that chemistry can become part of the appeal of Hallmark’s larger world, where familiar actors can bring a sense of comfort even when the stories and settings change
