Part Two: Taylor Cole and Steve Lund Give the Romance Its Warmth
The heart of Unlocking Christmas is the relationship between Kate and Kevin, played by Taylor Cole and Steve Lund. Their chemistry gives the movie a comfortable rhythm, particularly because their characters do not immediately feel like perfectly matched holiday soulmates.
Their early interactions have an independent, slightly antagonistic quality. Both characters have their own ideas about what they want, and neither seems eager to let another person rearrange those plans. As the Christmas mystery begins bringing them together, however, the relationship gradually becomes less about the clues and more about the unexpected connection developing between them.
That gradual change is one of the movie’s strengths. The romance does not need to shout to be convincing. Small reactions, shared discoveries, moments of humor, and the simple experience of spending time together allow Kate and Kevin to become more comfortable with each other.
Taylor Cole is particularly well suited to this kind of role. Her Hallmark résumé already includes projects such as Ruby Herring Mysteries, Matching Hearts, One Perfect Wedding, Pumpkin Everything, and Long Lost Christmas, giving her a familiar place within the network’s romantic and mystery storytelling.
As Kate, she brings an appealing balance of independence and warmth. The character does not lose her personality simply because romance enters the picture. Instead, the Christmas adventure gives her another reason to reconsider what she thought she wanted from life.
Steve Lund brings a similarly relaxed presence to Kevin. Before Unlocking Christmas, Lund had built a television career that included Bitten, Reign, Schitt’s Creek, and other projects, while also becoming a recognizable face in Hallmark productions. Hallmark’s own profile notes that he moved from hockey into entertainment after studying at Vancouver Film School.
That background helps explain why he fits so naturally into the movie’s easygoing tone. Kevin needs to be charming without becoming too polished, romantic without becoming overly dramatic, and funny without turning every moment into a joke. Lund gives the character that balance.
Together, Cole and Lund create the kind of chemistry that makes viewers comfortable spending an entire evening with their characters. There is no need for the romance to become melodramatic. Its appeal comes from watching two people slowly discover that an unexpected detour may actually be leading them somewhere meaningful.
And that idea connects beautifully with the movie’s larger Christmas theme.
Kate and Kevin begin the story with their own expectations. Yet the mysterious clues encourage them to look beyond those expectations. The journey becomes a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful moments in life are not the ones we carefully plan.
Christmas stories have always loved that idea. The season becomes a pause from ordinary life, a time when people reconsider old assumptions and notice possibilities they might otherwise have missed.
