Part One: A Winter Romance Built on More Than Nostalgia
There is something instantly inviting about a Christmas romance set against ice, snow and the possibility of a second chance. Christmas Coupon, released in 2019, leans into that familiar holiday atmosphere while giving its central romance a simple emotional question: what happens when someone from your past unexpectedly walks back into your life? The film stars Courtney Mathews as Alison Grant and Aaron Noble as Ivan Hall, with Daniel Knudsen serving as writer and director.
Although Christmas Coupon is sometimes grouped by viewers alongside the wave of cozy holiday romances associated with the Hallmark style, it is not actually a Hallmark production. It was produced through Crystal Creek Media and released in December 2019. That distinction does not change why the film can appeal to viewers who enjoy the comforting ingredients of seasonal romance: snowy surroundings, familiar faces, family connections, an old love returning at just the right moment, and the promise that Christmas can open doors people thought were permanently closed.
At the heart of the movie is Alison, a former figure-skating champion whose relationship with skating has changed. After losing her position teaching at a rink, she begins giving lessons on a friend’s frozen pond. What could have been presented simply as a setback instead becomes an opportunity for Alison to rediscover something important about herself. Her story carries a quiet message that feels particularly appropriate for a Christmas movie: sometimes a disappointment is not the end of the road. Sometimes it pushes you toward a life you would never have chosen otherwise.
Then Ivan arrives.
He is not simply a new romantic interest appearing out of nowhere. He is Alison’s former high school sweetheart, now a successful hockey player who brings his niece to her skating lessons. Their reunion initially carries the awkwardness of two people who share history but have spent years moving in different directions. That history gives their relationship a different emotional texture from the typical instant Christmas romance. There is unfinished business between them, even if neither is immediately ready to admit it.
That is one of the film’s most appealing ideas. Love does not always disappear simply because life becomes complicated. Sometimes people grow apart because circumstances, ambitions and timing pull them in different directions. And sometimes Christmas has a way of bringing those people back into the same room—or, in this case, onto the same ice.
