A Biltmore Christmas belongs in that last category. Released in 2023, the film stars Bethany Joy Lenz as screenwriter Lucy Hardgrove and Kristoffer Polaha as Jack Huston, the leading man of the fictional 1947 holiday film His Merry Wife! Jonathan Frakes also appears as Winston. The story begins with Lucy working on a remake of the old Christmas classic before an extraordinary discovery at Biltmore sends her back into the world of the original production.
That premise alone makes the movie stand out. Time travel can easily become complicated or gimmicky, but here it functions almost like another form of Christmas magic. Lucy isn’t simply visiting another period in history. She is stepping into the kind of romantic world that inspired the stories she has spent her career writing. The real Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina played a central role in the production. The movie was filmed there in January 2023, using locations throughout the estate, including the Gardens, Conservatory, and The Inn on Biltmore Estate. Fifteen days of filming took place at Biltmore, and the production even used eight vintage cars and approximately 200 yards of artificial snow.
Those details matter because the setting never feels incidental. The grandeur of the estate gives the movie a sense of occasion. Christmas lights against historic architecture, elegant interiors, winter landscapes, and period costumes create an atmosphere that feels richer than the average holiday setting.
It is easy to understand why viewers continue to single this movie out when discussing memorable Hallmark Christmas favorites. Even critics noted its combination of old-Hollywood glamour, time travel, romance, and the beauty of the Biltmore setting.
